Chiropractors Everywhere, what do I do about this competition? Part 2

Last time we talked about looking at our “Competition” in a different light. We talked about controlling things that you have control over, specifically the experience that your patients have in your office. A highly trained staff with great procedures will create an awesome customer service experience. But there is another thing you can focus on to improve your practice and that is you.

How do you become a better doctor? There are lots of ways to improve your doctoring ability. Your education is the first and foremost. Make sure you continue to learn. In Kentucky, chiropractors are required to have 12 hours of continuing education each year. But to grow as a practitioner that is not enough. Find something you love and explore it. Add techniques to your practice. Learn more about the body and how to diagnose it. Chances are you will not encounter a situation where you are too educated. But you may encounter a situation where you are not educated enough.

Professional development is great, but what other ways can you grow? You need to work on yourself. You need to read books and listen to podcasts. You might ask why that is important. Let me ask you this?  Do you know yourself? That may sound like a silly question, but it is a very important question. The better you know yourself the better you will be able to set goals, develop relationships and be ultimately successful.

Many of us are going through the motions of life. We may not be happy with our home life, work life or the level of success we have achieved. Many times when you don’t know yourself, you are just responding to things that happen in your life.  You are not taking the time to stop and make a conscious decision on how to proceed. If we don’t know ourselves we typically will not have goals to strive for. This can lead to confusion and the feeling of being the hamster on the wheel. Just running as hard as we can but not accomplishing anything.

It is important to learn to know yourself. What are your strengths and weaknesses?Where do you want to be?What makes you happy and what doesn’t? When you start to achieve these things in your personal life, your professional life will take off. Have you ever met that very successful person and said, “Man if I could just be that lucky.”? Success is very rarely based on luck. It’s about having yourself in the right place at the right time with a goal. This is why it’s important to make conscious decisions about life and how to best position yourself to achieve your goals.

With the advent of the internet we have more opportunities to learn about ourselves than ever before. Maybe it’s subscribing to Dave Ramsey’s pod cast and listening to his views and advice on business and personal leadership. Maybe you want to read.  Find a business or personal development book and start today. Motivational speakers like Zig Ziegler and Tony Robbins may be a way to help you get started. Once you start somewhere you will develop your own road map to finding yourself. It takes time and effort, but you are worth that investment!

We are all different. We have different needs, but continue to learn. Learn about your profession, but more importantly learn about yourself. If you have not ever done this, start today. It’s never too late. I am willing to bet that your life becomes much more successful as you learn to identify yourself. You will start creating your own luck and making conscious decisions. Then YOU will be in the right place at the right time!

Chiropractors Everywhere, what do I do about this competition?

Chiropractors Everywhere, what do I do about this competition?

If you practice in a metropolitan area you have had multiple chiropractors around you for years. If you’re a small town chiropractor you are seeing more and more chiropractors moving in. How do you make it with all this competition? They are stealing your patients or potential patients. But I want you to stop for a minute and think about this situation.

The old notion of chiropractors seeing only 8-10% of the population has been shown to be wrong. The most recent Gallup-Palmer College of Chiropractic Survey showed that 25% of the population has seen a chiropractor in the past five years. Over 50% of those had seen their chiropractor in the past 12 months. It further goes on to show that 28% of the population would choose Chiropractic as their first provider for neck or back pain. The number of people that are seeing chiropractors is ever increasing. I would contendthat there are plenty of patients to go around.

I want to challenge you to look at this “competition” differently. You cannot control how many doctors move into your town. What do you have control over? You can control what you do in your practice. You can control the type and quality of service that you provide. You can choose to be a better doctor and in the end the better service and product will always win. Turn your focus away from worrying about things you have no control over and focus on yourself. Improve yourself.Make yourself a better doctor. Improve your office procedures and customer service.

You might ask, how do I do this? Let’s talk about your patients experience in your office today. Make sure that your 1st impression is a great one. The first experience a new patient has with your office is the call to make an appointment. Have you called your office to see how the phone is being answered? Have you trained your office staff lately? This is important if your office staff is 1 day old or has been with you for 40 years. As humans sometimes we get lazy and stop doing things we have been taught. Maybe that 1st phone call can be improved. What does the patient see when they enter your office? Is it clean and bright? Is your staff ready to welcome them with a smile? Do they sit in your reception area or your treatment room (AKA the 2nd waiting room) for long periods? Make sure you are conscious of their time and make their experience in your office an efficient one.

These little things make a patient choose you over the “competition”. When you pay attention to customer service your patients will talk to their friends about you. That means referrals and more new patients. I have seen it time and time again that patients are happy with your care, but not excited about the experience. They will continue to come to see you, but they will not talk to their friends about you. Make your office experience a fantastic experience that stands out from everyone else.

You have control of how a patients sees your office, make the best use of it!

United We Stand, Divided We Fall

Posted By Nicholas Payne, Thursday, August 4, 2016

United We Stand, Divided We Fall

The motto of this Commonwealth is “United We Stand, Divided We Fall”. This is so true for the chiropractic profession. As the leading profession in cost effective conservative care we are at a pinnacle change. As a profession we have a choice, do we continue to focus on our differences and stay fractured and divide, or do we find  our common ground and work together.

I believe it’s very safe to say as a profession we tend to be segmented and focus on our differences. Those differences can be our political views of what Chiropractic is or how we should move forward. They could be a philosophical difference such as what a chiropractor should or should not do. Maybe it’s a problem you have had with a certain group or chiropractors in the past. But I believe that no matter how strong your feelings are, how severe the divide is, we can find the common ground. At the end of the day every one of us are Chiropractors. We take sick people, provide high quality chiropractic care to them, and watch the body heal. Every one of us see those miracles in our practice every day. I would venture to say 90-95% of what we do, no matter how different we think we are, is the same. But we choose to focus on the differences. This allows us to remain divided and as the motto says, fall.

Healthcare in this country is beginning to implode. The cost of health care continues to rise. People have health insurance they cannot afford to use because of the outlandish premiums and deductibles they have to pay. Patients are subjected to unneeded testing and procedures because it’s the best medicine has to offer. We have a solution. CHIROPRACTIC IS A SOLUTION TO OUR HEALTHCARE PROBLEMS. If Chiropractors were to manage chronic pain as the 1st line we would improve the healthcare system immensely. The research is there. That work has been done time and time again. We have to decide as a profession that we are going to stand up and tell everyone we have a solution. We cannot fix everything, but we can manage chronic pain.

This brings me back to “United we stand, divided we fall”. As a profession we are choosing to fight each other over this technique or that procedure. These debates are important and they are healthy. However the train is leaving the station and we are not on it. We have to decide to work together. We don’t have to agree on everything.  We can use the 90-95% that we do agree on as our foundation to move forward together.  Behind closed doors let’s debate our disagreements. But we have to be big enough to set our egos and personal agendas to the side and advance the profession. Save our healthcare system and BE the HEALTHCARE PROVIDER FOR THE FUTURE!

The choice is yours.  Do  we as Doctors of Chiropractic join our state and national organizations and work together? Or do we keep operating in a divided manner and fall and miss the opportunity that is in front of us? If you don’t agree with everything the organization does, get involved, be active and use your time to serve Chiropractic and help make the changes in the world we need. It will take the collective knowledge of all of us to take the right steps! Choose wisely.

Back-up? Yeah I got one... I think

Back-up? Yeah I got one… I think

With the ever increasing amount of data we have to manage in healthcare, backing it up can sometimes fall off our radar. We get so busy healing sick patients that our digital infrastructure doesn’t come to the forefront of our mind. Hopefully in your HIPAA and Compliance manuals you have set out good usage policies and part of that is a backup plan. A current backup of your data is vital in today’s world.

Let’s talk about what threatens our data. We all think about viruses and malware infecting our systems and stealing data. Good usage policies, appropriate firewalls, and an anti-virus can help defend you in this area. A new type of computer malware is called RansomWare. This is a file that infects your computer and requires you to pay someone a fee to release your files. Many times you are stuck because anti-viruses don’t work on these. You can either pay the fee or revert to a clean back up if you have one. But the biggest vulnerability is people. Doctors or staff click on a web link in an email or visit a web page and, in violation of the policy, become infected.

Are you thinking, those are all about the internet but you are talking about backups? All of those internet issues can cause your practice management system to become corrupt, infected or held for ransom. So can your office handle any of those things happening to your network or your computer?

Many times backups become necessary due to hardware failures. Sometime hard drives or computers break. The data may or may not be accessible when it does happen. The other thing that occurs is a natural disaster or an accident. If your office is involved in a flood, a fire or a storm do you have a secure offsite data back up in case your onsite data is no longer useable? You are responsible for that data and information and you need a plan as to how you are going to protect it. How quickly can you recover from a disaster? If you performed your Security Risk Analysis for HIPPA you had to address this issue.

There are many types of backups out there. You can back up your data live by having 2 hard drives mirror each other. This protects you from hardware issues, but if your data becomes corrupted you have 2 copies of corrupted data. You can do a daily back up of the data and keep a weeks’ worth or a months’ worth of data. This allows you to go back to a specific day and restore your data. You may have a hybrid of both types of backup in your office. But one point that many offices don’t take into consideration is what you are backing up. Is your backup complete and is it useable data? Many times offices find issues in the backup system when they are restoring the data and it doesn’t work. You need to not only back up your data but also check the integrity of that data to ensue you are backing it up when you want and the backup contains all the data you need.

Now you have a backup.  Where do you keep it? Do you store the data in the cloud? How about a thumb drive you take home? Do you take the laptop with the data on it home with you every day? All of these could work, but the security of the data must be ensured. Drives need to be encrypted and thumb drives and computers pass worded. Security becomes a big issue when you leave the physical safeguards of your office.

As a chiropractor this process may not be within your knowledge set. You need to find an IT vendor that can help you with this process and ensure HIPPA compliance. Backing up your data is a complex multifaceted problem. You have to develop a system that is secure and compliant. This article is by no means an exhaustive review of what needs to be done, but hopefully will make you think about your data and how you protect it. Have a good plan, practice your plan and make sure it works.

Who Ya Gonna Call?

Who Ya Gonna Call?

If this was the 1980’s and someone said “Who ya gonna call?” there’s a really good chance the answer might be Ghostbusters. As big a help that Dan Akroyd and Bill Murray were with ghosts I don’t think they would be helpful with the next problem.

“Who ya gonna call” with your practice issues? Who do you call? When you have questions that range from issues such as insurance, EHR questions, malpractice insurance recommendations, audit problems, and even down to patient retention. If you got one phone call, who are you going to use it for?

Are you a KAC Member? Did you realize that instead of calling your buddy down the street who probably got the information from another buddy down the street or some random national online website that you can call the KAC.

Who else is the best to call with your state level insurance questions than the KAC! The same group that several weeks out of the month spends time talking to the Medical Directors of numerous insurance companies to bring all of your problems to the forefront to be addressed.

Who else is best to call when you have questions about an EHR system than the KAC Executive office who has talked with or used many of the products that are available today and can give you information in regards to them?

Who else is best to call when you have a Medicare question than the KAC Executive Office where our executive director not only teaches the class state wide, but also is on the ACA’s Medicare Committee.

Who else is best to call when you have a question about malpractice insurance?Did you know there are multiple companies out there that have the same coverage? Are you currently paying too much? We can help steer you in the direction of our business members that support chiropractic in Kentucky.

Who else are you going to call when your equipment messes up and you need to have it fixed or replaced? The KAC has numerous business members that can help you with many of the issues that you have all while potentially getting you an even better deal as a member.

Who else are you going to call when you need education to continue your license or even education that you want to further your knowledge base for things that you are looking to expand your practice. The KAC has brought education to the state such as DOT, dry needling, and many other seminars that allow you to avoid driving across the country to be able to get such education.

We are YOUR Practice Partner. The KAC is here for you and is only one phone call away. If you are a member please remember to feel free to pick up the phone at any time and call YOUR Executive Office for help at (859) 554-4498.

If you aren’t a member then you still need to make that phone call to the same number to join. This is going to help eliminate all your other calls searching down the correct or accurate information.

“Who ya gonna call?” The KAC!

Teamwork Gets It Done

Team Work Gets It Done

What teams are you a part of? I would say you are on many teams and most of them have nothing to do with sports. If you are married you are on a team. Do you serve any community organizations?Well if you do, welcome to the team. Inside your practice is no different, you are on a team. Whether you are an owner or an associate, it doesn’t matter. The office has to work together to achieve its goals. By virtue of being a chiropractor you are on a bigger team, that of Chiropractic. We have to work together to ensure our laws are protected, our patients have access and our communities can achieve the health that is available to them through Chiropractic care.Sometimes you are the leader and sometimes you are just a team member.

I will tell you most people don’t view life this way, but it makes sense when you stop and think about it. It may change how you approach challenges in your life if you evaluate your team. Surround yourself with a great team and everything is possible. Let’s talk about how this can help your practice.

As much as we would like to think we personally are our practice, most of us have help. If you are a one person show, I still contest you have family and friends that help and support you. For those of us that have a staff of 1 or a staff of 30, it’s a team effort. We all have multiple hats we wear and we have to have a game plan. A staff meeting is the locker room game plan. A goal has been set and a plan to achieve that goal has been set. Then we have to go execute the plan and win the game. During the staff meeting you need to discuss the goals of the office. If everyone on that team is not on board with those goals or does not know what those goals are you cannot efficiently execute your plan. It makes it really hard to achieve your goals.

You need to set your goals first. Then with the help of your team create the game plan.

The part most of us fail at is that we need to revisit our plan and measure our success. Be open and honest with your team. If something isn’t working, change it. It’s okay to change your game plan, sometimes things on the field change. Make sure you keep everyone engaged and focused on the goal of the practice. As the leader, don’t get too caught up in micro managing every job. Set good policies and do evaluations of your team members. Let them know how they are doing and help them develop into great team members. With some education and framework you can let them just do their job and you can focus on your responsibilities.

You have assembled a team of committed people and clearly shown them your goals. Get their input on how you create your plan to achieve those goals. Engage them and empower them to get the practice to those goals. Remember a dictator does not have a team.  Work together and develop a great plan everyone can support and work to reach the ultimate goal!

You can take this entire process and apply it to many aspects of your life. Use the support and help available to you. Build great teams around you and go Live Your Dream!

The Sky Is The Limit

Posted By Dr Nicholas Payne, Thursday, May 12, 2016

The Sky Is The Limit

When was the last time you looked at your goals? Mine was this morning. It’s part of my daily routine.

Many people don’t understand the power of writing down your goals. If they are not on paper somewhere they are not real. You have to envision reaching your goals before you can actually achieve them. Your goals are what strategic planning is all about. We all do strategic planning weather we realize it or not, but do we do it well? We make decisions in our practices and lifeevery day that affect us moving forward. When we understand fully where we want to go we can make thosedecisions better and help us achieve our goals.

If you do a Google search for goal setting you will find an endless list of resources available. But what I have found is your goals have to be specific, measurable and you have to set a deadline. A goal without a deadline is a dream. Dreams help us decide where we are going, but the actual act of setting and measuring the goal in a time frame causes us to take action.

The other thing I have found about goals is we have to own them. Inside we have to be committed to them, live them and make them happen. You need to be committed to your goals and look at them often. If you are not incorporating them into your everyday routine you will not be able to achieve them and make your dreams become a reality.

When I set a goal I spend some time dreaming about what would be perfect. If everything works in my favor where do I want to be? The more vividly you dream the easier it is to set your goals and action steps. Dream big!  Don’t let the reality of your current situation make your dreams small. If you own your dreams, set your goals correctly and work your butt off,you can achieve anything.

Now that you have your dream, let’s plan how you get from today to your dream. You have to have a road map or a plan. Your initial goal cannot be to arrive at your dream spot. It would be nice but you need to set smaller achievable goals that will get you to where you want to be. Most commonly you set your goal to achieve in 5 years. Then you work backwards to see what you have to achieve each year to make it to the 5 year goal. Those yearly goals can be broken down further to quarterly or monthly goals. When you look at the smaller goals you will see that those tend to be very achievable.

So far you have dreamt a huge awesome dream, set your yearly, quarterly & monthly goals. However, you are ready to start just yet. You must now decide how will you know you have reached your goals? How do you know if you have made progress toward those goals? You have to decide how and when you are going to measure your goals. You need to have a way to measure and report those goals. It may the number of new patients, your net profit, time spent with your children or budget surplus left in the checking account after your monthly bills. Decide how you are going to measure success of each goal and track it. Now when you review your goals you can check your progress. Do you need to work harder toward a goal? Are you focused or do you need to refocus?

Now its time to dream an awesome dream and create your road map to achieve it. All that is left is time, energy and work. Good luck achieving those goals and living your dream!

Fuzzy Practices Don’t Offer The Rewards You Deserve

Fuzzy Practices Don’t Offer The Rewards You Deserve

In practice we have many hurdles to overcome. Sometimes our practices will start to retract or stop growing. Our mission and goals for our practice can become fuzzy or not well defined. If you find yourself in this position you need to reevaluate how you devote your time and energy. What we find is often our focus has changed or been diverted. Instead of your practice being your focus, it becomes your job and you start showing up and punching the clock. No one cares about your practice as much as you do. You have to be present to ensure that it’s growing. That means mentally present, not just physically present.

Life is so busy today. There are demands on your time coming from every direction. Family, children, school, church, organizations you belong to are all looking for time from you. This leaves very little time to focus on your practice and your practice will start to suffer. All of these areas are important, but you have to learn how to prioritize your limited time. Time is the most precious commodity you possess and you need to use it wisely.

Your family and children obviously must be your first priority, because without the support of your family really nothing else matters. A close second needs to be your practice. If you are not successful in practice then all the other areas become more difficult to do. Your successful practice allows you the time to help others and serve with all your other obligations.

Much like you, I tend to give a lot of my time to others. To improve my community and to help those who need help. To this end we must not lose focus on what allows us to give this help, our practice. As you grow and develop you find this demand on your time becomes more and more. You have to learn to say no. We all have a point that we become stretched too thin and things start falling in the cracks. Take time to evaluate yourself and see if this is happening. You may have to tell someone no, or reduce your time commitments to some organizations.Make sure the organizations you commit the most time to help you achieve the goals of your practice.

I find when I am focused on my patients and my being proactive the only thing that can happen is growth. I am sure you will find this same thing if you start looking for it. Have you ever implemented new procedures and set a goal to achieve a certainlevel of service. If you do not set a new goal to move toward after a while you will find your office shrinking. Make sure you are always setting new goals and are focused like a laser on achieving those goals. If you do, your practice will flourish and you will be better able to help others. Make sure your time is allotted appropriately and remember it is okay to tell someone no. It’s a hard lesson to learn, but one that will improve your life.

Hey, can you make a change in the healthcare system?

Posted By Dr Nicholas R. Payne, Thursday, February 25, 2016
Updated: Thursday, February 25, 2016

Hey, can you make a change in the healthcare system?

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) has started a new push for Medicare Equality. This will impact all Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) across the country that treat Medicare patients. It may also affect your friends and family that are currently Medicare recipients or will be in the future. At some point this may include you!

In today’s Medicare system, patients are forced to pay out of pocket or choose to not receive services beyond the chiropractic adjustment. This means their initial examination, X-rays, therapeutic modalities, therapeutic exercise and manual therapy all have to be paid by the Medicare beneficiary. This is an unjust denial to full access to chiropractic care. The ACA is working to make all services provided by a DC covered under the Medicare system. This will allow Medicare recipients to have access to high quality, cost effective chiropractic care. The research shows that when patients receive chiropractic treatment, they are healthier. They use less pharmacology, they have fewer surgeries and they visit healthcare providers less often. But the current system does not allow them coverage for this type of health care.

Why does this problem exist today? The federal government relies on antiquated statutes that unfairly discriminate against DC’s. It does not allow Medicare beneficiaries’ access to the care they deserve and care that will improve their health safely and effectively.  Washington has allowed this discrimination to go on for too long. Our patients are not achieving optimal health care and the cost burden is being shifted to them. It’s time we stand up and tell Washington it’s time to change. Our seniors deserve better, our country deserves better and its time we make the change we want to see in the healthcare system.

Don’t forget that what Medicare does affects many other health plans. Have you noticed how chiropractic is continually being reduced? Any time a plan is exempt from state law it uses Medicare guidelines. It reimburses for the adjustment only. We have an opportunity to change the Medicare guidelines, but we have to all make an effort.

You can help end this discrimination. The ACA has a petition that it has started and needs as much support as we can garner. You as a provider can sign the petition. There are patient hand outs that you can use to have your patients sign the petition. Even if your patients are not currently on Medicare they have family and friends that are. How many times have patients moved to Medicare and complained to you about having to pay for things that were covered under their prior insurance? This is an opportunity to make a major change in the healthcare system of this country.  You need to have your patients sign the National Medicare Equality Petition Today!

As a healthcare provider, you can sign the National Medicare Equality Petition as well! Print off the patient petition and have your patients sign it today. Create the change in healthcare that our country needs!
